What would be the correct approach to minimum credit card purchase?!

Question: What would be the correct approach to minimum credit card purchase?
I know it is not legal for a business to set a minimum credit card purchase. Especially with a Visa card. I had been a regular customer at a small Thai restaurant. One day I stopped by for lunch and noticed I only had a few dollars in cash. The bill was about $7.00 and when I handed the man my credit card he asked me if I had read the sign. The sign said minimum credit card purchase is $9.00. What happened next was a total nightmare. I had to try to find a bank machine and it was lunch time and extremely busy. I had to drive several miles in bumper to bumper traffic. About 30 minutes later I came back and paid my $7.00, in cash, and never went back. I did not report them because the man's wife was nice to me in the past. What would have been proper? I was expecting the man to give me a break because I was a regular customer, but he did not. He was very adamant about me paying him in cash. As a matter of principle I decided not to "pad" my order by purchasing a drink for the additional $2.00.

There is nothing illegal about setting a minimum purchase amount.

Every transcation thru the CC machine costs the bussiness. If the amount run thru isn;t worth their time then they are loosing money.

It's your fault for not being prepared when you went out.

P.S. being a regular you should have known thier rule ahead of time.

Businesses can set a minimum credit card purchase requirement as long as it's the same for all cards. This excludes debit cards, however.

The reason for having minimum purchase requirements is due to the fees they have to pay Visa, and others, for being able to charge credit cards. So the business does not get the full $7 if you pay with a credit card.

Place yourself in the owner's shoes. If they were to extend that courtesy to you and to everyone else, they would have less of a profit. How does he know if you are being legitimate about not having money or just looking for a free meal if he were to give you a break. If it's a popular restaurant, do you expect him to remember or put in place a tracking system just to aid those that do not have cash or wish to buy $9 worth of food?

You are the consumer. It is your responsibility to have money to pay for the goods you want to purchase. I would've bought up to $9 and use my credit card rather than do what you did and drive all over town. Plain and simple, own up and learn. Not to sound harsh or rude, but the world does not revolve around you. If you disagree in a matter of principle, then do not give that restaurant your money anymore but understand that it is not the owner's fault.
