Urad dal substitute- mysore murgh (chicken) recipe?!

Question: Urad dal substitute- mysore murgh (chicken) recipe?
I'm making a recipe called Mysore Murgh (chicken from Mysore) which is an Indian dish. It calls for urad dal, which I am familiar with, but it does not specify which kind. Unfortunately, I don't have the whole ones anymore. I only have the split, skinned ones. I also have channa dal and split moong dal if any of those will work.

In the recipe, the urad dal is added to the oil along with fennel seeds and red chilis, after adding the mustard seeds.

Should I use the channa dal? Or should I use the split urad dal without the skin? It's confusing because urad dal is being used more or less as a spice here. I know that channa dal gets used that way, so that's why I suggested it.

I appreciate any helpful responses.

Actually you can use almost any type of dal, but you might have to adjust the cooking time a bit> i would use the moong dal you have since that can go in with spices as well.

I have an extensive range of chicken recipes but have not had the opportunity to read/cook this mysore chicken dish.Going by the recipe suggestion,i feel you will be fine using the split urad dal,in fact i think that is the dal called for.The whole urad is called 'sabit/sabut urad, changing to channa will alter the flavor you are aiming for.
