What is "American Cheese"?!

Question: What is "American Cheese"?
You often hear Americans talk about how much they love American cheese. But what is it? It just looks like Kraft singles to me, which really is the most inferior cheese on the planet.

Do Americans only love it because it has "American" in the name? Because I can't imagine anyone actually having a taste for this nasty processed stuff.

Answers:

It's fine to have your own opinion but you should respect others as well. I like american cheese because it melts easily and has a very mild taste.

its basically processed cheese, usually cheddar

the advantages are it has a extremely long shelf life, and melts better than most natural cheeses
many like it because of its mild, smooth taste
also, its cheap

the disadvantages is it does have fillers and preservatives.

OOps!
Do I see you have already formed your opinion
There is NO insult intended by me - But only information to correct poorly conceived ideas
In America - millions of gallons of milk are produced daily - - but the industry discovered the methods to save and dehydrate the milk solids and the whey - pasteurized - - NOW under controlled recipes these products can be combined (reconstituted) They can be found in your basic cake mix - breads etc - even to produce the worlds finest cheddar cheese - American Cheddar
- - (a name assigned by the cheese producers of the world - just as Swiss (also a cheddar) and the others )- - it will combine with any dish to produce a smooth sauce and melt in well into your foods
and if your palette has not been rotted by the stinky and overpowering natural brewed and bitter cheeses you might find American (cheddar) to be excellent in your "cooking" needs
as for the comment "plastic" - - I've seen the mold grow on your natural stuff ugly
as for "processed" - - what silly logic is that ? - - the same process is used - heat - aging - milk solids - whey - bacteria - and packaging
Sorry but - - have you visited Kraft foods web site ? they make more than just singles
By the way - yellow die is required by international law to identify processed cheese - otherwise all would be white - the color of milk remember smoking adds it color
Happy Valentines Day
good luck my friend

American cheese is a processed cheese. It is orange, yellow, or white in color and mild in flavor, with a medium-firm consistency, and melts easily which makes it a favorite for grilled cheese sandwiches. The soft texture and mild flavor is also a favorite among children with less developed palates.

That's not true.
That Bobo Kraft singles stuff doesn't count.
We have Wisconsin cheese, Muenster Cheese, Monterey Jack, Colby cheese, Colby-Jack, Maytag Blue cheese, Brick cheese,

if you think american cheese is inferior then don't eat it. others enjoy it, live and let live. there is yellow american and white american cheese.

Don't be xenophobic and ethnocentric; it's unattractive and rude. True "american" cheese (NOT a pasteurized processed cheese-type food product) is a sweet, creamy, mild semi-soft cheese with exceptional melting qualities.

I haven't figured out what it is yet. I can't pronounce the ingredients on the package......

American cheese is processed cheese, like Kraft

I think that most Americans love it because thats what they have grown up on.
:)

Its the stuff that is put into 'cheese' burgers x

its yellow and its plastic....
