If one is does not come from a Korean background, it is quite tough to answer. I go regularly to a Korean restaurant and have observed very small children, probably about 2-3 eating kimchi and (for me at least) very spicy soups. I would imagine that kids tastes all over the world are quite similar until they are endlessly bombarded by tv ads for all kinds of sweets and other junk foods. I have noticed that our small grandkids 3 and 4 like spicy and very tart foods and they have no problem eating a lime or a lemon,
Exactly as they said, they start out easy on them, as not all Kimchi is horrendously spicy. They save the nuclear fuel strength for grownups.
My aunt Chong Cha, when she first came to America, made some kimchi for my grandmother.
It ATE THROUGH the old school Tupperware containers (these things could withstand a nuclear holocaust) and permeated EVERYTHING in the fridge with the smell of highly fermented (longer than most) and HEAVILY spiced cabbage.
I'm still slightly afraid to try the stuff. It's supposed to be amazing though!
lol
you're right about it being a bit spicy for kids.. but most (if not all?) korean kids go through a phase when they're just starting to eat kimchi where they will dip it (i.e. rinse it) in water. actually, it's usually the person feeding them like their mother who will dip a tiny piece in water and rinse off the excess spice, then feed it to them. i think this starts maybe around 2 years old? they will probably keep rinsing their kimchi in water until they are older like 4-7, depending on their taste.
nice question, btw. it's interesitng. : )
having been a korean kid learning to eat kimchi =)
well its like a tradition
but most Koreans don't think Kimchi as a spicy food (for some reason)
i, also find Kimchi not spicy at all either ^_^
but i think kids start to eat them when they are able to eat normal food
cuz my cousin eats kimchi even though shes 3
bi~
To answer your second question about kids and spicy foods - if they grow up eating it, then kids will have no problems with spicy foods. My son is 5 and loves hot foods (hot spicy).
