Not necessary to deep fry with pool of oil, you can pan fry or grill to get the crispy result.
2 tablespoons of oil is enough to pan fry 1 pound of tofu in skillet.

Slice the tofu into 1/2 inch or 1 inch cubes (preferred).
In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat and add the tofu. Cook for 4 to 6 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and lightly crispy.

Crispy Fried Tofu
block firm or extra firm tofu
3 tbsp nutritional yeast
2 tbsp flour
2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
2 tbsp olive oil
Slice the tofu into 1/2 inch cubes.
In a small bowl, combine the tofu with the remaining ingredients, except the oil, and toss gently to coat the tofu well. Or, place all ingredients in a zip-lock bag or covered container and shake well.
In a large frypan, heat the oil over medium heat and add the tofu.
Cook for 4 to 6 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and lightly crispy.

It is most likely deep-fried tofu called "agedashi-dofu" in Japanese. It is usually cooked in a tempura pan or heavy frying pan at 170 degrees.

no, they grill it in front of you. theres no deep frying involved. they squirt some oil on it and grill it on a super hot grill and coat it with sauce.

yes deep fried.
Make a batter out of panko, or seasoned flour. Dredge tofu chunks in egg then the panko and deep fry them a minute, they don't soak up much oil, so they are not fatty.

99.9 percent sure thats what it means
