Can I replace Italian basil with Indian Basil (Tulsi , Holy basil) for cooking?!


Question: Can I replace Italian basil with Indian Basil (Tulsi , Holy basil) for cooking?
Hi I leave in India and I want to make some Italian dishes ( like bruschetta, pasta alla norma). Now only problem is that i don't have italian basil but Tulsi is available in my garden. So can i use that in Italian dishes?

Tulsi is never used in Indian cooking except in Ayurvedic preparations and in pujas. Probably because of its religious stature. You cannot substitute tulsi for basil since basil has a sweeter flavor while Tulsi is more pungent in taste. Suggest you ask your favorite restaurants to tell you where they get their supply from, I am sure it is a local farm. If nothing works, look for dry basil in specialty food stores or amazon.com

Basil grows well in India because it needs good sunlight. Try looking for a horticultural farm or a an agricultural college for the seeds. You can order basil seeds from amazon-

You can buy the Italian Basil seeds online for next to nothing.



It wont be exactly the same, but close enough
