I will always try to order different things and here are some of my likings

Grilled salmon / iwashi
Chicken Katsu Kare Don / Udon (chicken cutlet curry rice / udon0
Chicken Katsu Don (chicken cutlet with rice)
Cold Soba
Sushi (assorted but must have Inarizushi)
Ebi Tempura
Teriyaki Chicken Don / Ramen
Miso / Shoyu / Tonkotsu / Ramen
Omurice (omlette rice)
Yakiudon (stir-fried udon)
Kitsune Udon (with Aburaage (sweetened deep-fried tofu pockets)
Grilled food (chicken wings / chicken skin / chicken / pork)
Anmitsu (different type)
Hot green tea is a must.

If its for lunch, i might try one of the bento boxes that has several different things in small portions. When we are more hungry, we drop by a Japanses seafood buffet. I enjoy a mixed sashimi salad with the baby bitter greens, a selection of standard sushi, some tempura shrimp & vegs, a bowl of steamed manila clams, some baked mussels and more helpings of the salad. If its a small neighborhood place, I will ask for a suggestion of what is fresh that day.

When I go to the Japanese restaurant alone, I will order sushi, sashimi and tofu salad or a set lunch or ramen

While I am with 2 to 5 people, I will order more items, eg.,

sashimi moriawase (assorted raw seafood)
various sushi rolls or maki
Tonkatsu (deep fried pork chop cutlet)
yasai tenpura (deep fried assorted vegetables)
kinpila kobo (stir fried kobo with sesame oil and soy sauce)
gindara no saikyo yaki (roasted saikyo miso marinated cod fillet)
yakitori (charcoal grilled chicken dices with leek)
agedashi tofu (deep fried tofu cubes)
wakame salad (seaweed salad)
sukiyaki (beef & assorted vegetables hotpot)
and sake (Japanese white wine)

It really depends on what I feel like and some times there is too many great things its hard to choose. Some of my favourites are:

Tonkatsu (deep fried pork cutlet)
Yakisoba (stir fry noodles)
Sukiyaki
Okonomiyaki (savory pancake)
Gyoza (dumplings)
Tempura
Karaage (fried chicken)
Niku Jyaga (meat & potatoes in sweet sauce)
