Mediterranean fare may include olives, antipasto, fresh cheeses, rice or pasta, fresh seafood, fresh fruits. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is definitely a staple. The meals consist of three courses, served separately and in normal, healthy portions. Very unlike the US where everything is supersized and piled high on large plates.

The Med diet is based on healthy eating. The bulk of the diet should be fruits, veggies, whole grains, olive oil, beans and fish 2 or 3 times a week, It is based on and characterized by the traditional cooking style of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea like Greece, Italy, Spain, Albania etc.
The countries that border the Med Sea are the ones to consider.
But since country boundaries are political then you will find that some diets appear across country boundaries. Hence the need for a regional view rather than a country one.
Tons of fresh, seasonal fruit and veg, simply prepared and cooked, lashings of extra virgin olive oil, lean cuts of meat all washed down with gallons of red wine and rounded off with a few smokes of full strength Gaulloises ior Gitanes ciggies!
It's food from Southern European, Middle Eastern and North African countries like Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Libya, Egypt and Israel. Good stuff, indeed.
For all you dieters out there here's a link you should check out. It has links to several different types of diet plans.
