Is there Lye left in some Olives and is it safe to give my child olives?!

Question: Is there Lye left in some Olives and is it safe to give my child olives?
I hear that most Olives are cured in a caustic substance called Lye. I would assume some Lye is left behind and is this dangerous or does it have any long term health risks?

Answers:

Possibly there is some lye.
No, it is not dangerous. Humans have been using it for centuries to preserve foods.

Culinary doses of lye have no known health risks.

There's no lye left. It get's dissolved by the acid. Olives are safe to eat.

Lye is very caustic. And very useful. It's used to make a variety of food products and soap. Kind of like fire. You could not want to touch fire or give it to your children. But there are plenty of things that are made using fire that you definitely do want.

Some are, and some are not. If you are curing them yourself, do not use lye because the kids could get into it. If you are buying them precured at a store you are fine.

no
