Sadly, although people would love to believe tales of beef so good it was knighted, the truth is a bit less interesting. Sirloin comes from the french word surlonge. 'sur' means 'over' (such as in surname) and longe is loin. Loins are the upper thighs of the back legs, and the sirloin cut is just above that.

It is said that King Henry VIII was so fond of this particular steak cut from the loins of beef, that he termed it as ‘Sir Loin’, which became notoriously famous as the sirloin steak. The sirloin steak is cut from the lower portion of the ribs, which continues onwards to the rump and the tenderloin.
