There are many countries in Asia use fermented bean paste (miso) as seasoning or marinade, Korean, Chinese and Japanese, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc. produce miso (fermenting rice, barley and soy bean paste) in factories and there a lot different kinds of miso. fermented bean paste was invented by Chinese, if you count the populations of China and Japan together (China =1.3 billion as of mid of 2008, Japan = 127.4 millions as of early 2010) - total 1.427 billions people all are miso's fans, then, I would put my bet on miso!
(The world population is approximately 6.7 billion in total, then, China represents around 20% of the world population)
Miso is mainly just a Japanese (pop 127 million) thing that's spread through Japanese restaurants all over the world.
Hummus is eaten widely throughout the entire Middle East (pop 360 million) and to an large extent, globally.
I'd say Hummus wins by a landslide there.
I would think hummus, it's cheap to make, and chick peas are everywhere. Miso is expensive, at least in America and has too much salt and most people won't even taste it.
Both, hummus for those who like middle eastern food and miso for the sushi lovers.
overall I will say hummus.
miso hony
