How do you pronounce gyro?!
Answers:
like the g is a j. j-eye-row
(h)ee'-row.
Or you can just say "souvlaki". (as in "Olga's Souvlaki" actually a gyros sandwich) ... even though the meat in gyros and traditional souvlaki is cooked slightly differently. Souvlaki is meat from kabobs ... gyros is chopped and pre-formed meat that is browned on a rotating upright spit and sliced off in strips as it browns.
I have been told many times that it is pronounced like the word "euro" as in the currency or short for European. However, there is a restaurant around here called "spyro-gyro" which would seem to indicate that those two words are supposed to rhyme so I am very confused and this is an excellent question!
Growing up in Detroit, it was pronounced
* guy-row
* gii-row
* ee-row
But do not pronounce it "jai-row" or they'll just laugh at you.
If you are referring to a greek sandwich with lamb stuffed into a pita bread shell the correct pronunciation is (Hee-Ro)...Mechanical parts are pronounced (Jie-Ro)
I have twice been corrected by snooty servers in Greek restaurants, when I ordered gee - ro. Always the same ,"You mean j eye ro" Taste the same.

"Gee - roh" !!!
