What is porridge? is it like oatmeal?!

Question: What is porridge? is it like oatmeal?
I don't think Americans eat much porridge. Goldie Locks and Bears are the only ones that I hear eat it.

Answers:

Porridge is a more general term that is not used much any more.

It could be oatmeal, or it could be cream of wheat, or it could be grits (wheat). The more modern general term is "hot cereal".

Some people mistakenly think porridge is different than oatmeal because they have only had instant oatmeal. If you go to a store and buy stone ground oatmeal, that will make porridge.

Americans don't eat much 'porridge' because of language drift.
The language spoken in America has drifted so far from mainstream (aka BRITISH) English that it is almost a completely different language.

Oatmeal IS porridge. Made the same way with the same ingredients, it's just that because of language drift Americans now use a completely different word to the rest of the English speaking world.

Porridge is a popular breakfast in China. Mainly made of rice, nuts, dried fruits can be added. Some add meat or fish or eggs. It is nutritious, easy to digest. Google image search: 粥

Porridge is kinda like oatmeal but thicker. You just mix oats with hot milk or water and then mix sugar, honey, jam, etc in depending on your own taste. Some people even like to eat it with salt.

It's cooked oats. Cooked with water or milk.
Americans call it oatmeal, we call it porridge.
Same diff.

Never had oatmeal but love porridge. Not the instant stuff which is yuk! Know quite a few people that eat porridge. Yummy :-)
