Most Thai restaurants have common dishes like Pad Thai, curry, cashew chicken, and so on. Pad thai is probably a good choice for your first time since it's so well known (and it's really tasty). Cashew chicken is also good to start with, since it's mild and similar to things you've probably had before.

The best thing to do is go with a group, so you can try everyone else's food. Typically the food is served on large plates, and you then serve yourself from those.

I would not count on all Thai restaurants having the same menu. Many regions to choose from, so the chef has carte blance on that. The local Thai place here is outrageously delicious, but the menu does not inclue fried chicken stir fry.
