Cigarette brands enjoy the highest brand loyalty of all the consumer products, with less that 10% changing brands annually. Brands choices usually made during the life of a smoker, with a high concordance between the brand first smoked and the brand eventually selected as a usual brands

The reason is touched upon on all the answers. But mostly it comes down to the chemical additives they put in the tobacco. Some one already mentioned when they switch it makes them sick. There you go. Each cigarette brand and make has an added chemical cocktail. They do this because those chemicals are also addicting. So if you run out and smoke something else not only will it taste different but the chemicals will leave you craving your original brand. BRILLIANT!!!!!
The cigarette companies also use similar mixtures along all there brand lines like Marlboro and basic. That way if you can't get your brand you will feel more satisfied with one of there other brands than that of there competition.
A better question is what are the other chemicals? You really don't want to know there answer. There are over 400 differnt chemicals that can all be blended into a cigarette. They are really bad for you but they are pretty good.

this is a very good question. it probably has a lot to do with taste and cost and what others smoke that they hang around most(bumming cigarettes)
I smoked for several years. I can't really agree that the brand is such a big deal. People have to buy cigarettes all the time, though, and like other things people buy on a regular basis, they'd like to make it as easy as possible by committing to one brand. My first year or so of smoking, I would look for whatever was on-sale. But some don't taste as good as others. I eventually got into the groove of buying one brand because it makes the buying process easier.

I like my brand because if I smoke something else it makes me sick. mostly the taste is what I like.Camels are my brand
I personally smoke Marlboro, mainly the Menthol Smooths and Reds. I think they taste better than any of the others out there, however, I have been known to smoke the occasional Camel and Kamel Red (Not related in any way). I don't mind Lights, but, Ultra-Lights feel like breathing normally. I stick to Marbs because of the ease of buying I don't have to learn all the new flavors of a different brand.
The tobacco companies are very clever, they make the smokes in a way that you get conditioned to the brand you smoke, pot smokers like to try different strains and enjoy the difference in taste, smell, high. Tobacco companies have got you by the balls. If you like beer or pot there is a way around the cost, (home brew, grow your own) but with cigarettes there is no cheap alternative once conditioned and addicted. I hate the big corporations and the way they operate but I'm a hypocrite because I support the worst of them all: a tobacco company because I still buy and use there product.
