Is gelatin really made from cows??

i am a vegitarian and i'm not sure if this is true or not.

can you substitute the gelatin for another substance? and is it possible to by a brand of gelatin type products without the use of animals?

i have been told gelatin, marshmallows, and other things with gelatin are made from animals so if anyone has the true answer please tell me.

thank you!! :)

Answers:
The gelatin you eat in Jell-O comes from the collagen in cow or pig bones, hooves, and connective tissues. To make gelatin, manufacturers grind up these various parts and pre-treat them with either a strong acid or a strong base to break down cellular structures and release proteins like collagen. After pre-treatment, the resulting mixture is boiled. During this process, the large collagen protein ends up being partially broken down, and the resulting product is called gelatin. The gelatin is easily extracted because it forms a layer on the surface of the boiling mixture.

Gelatin is made from pigs.

Most gelatin products are made from pigs!!!!!!!!!!

its made from pig's hoofs

Yes, gelatin is rendered from animal parts, such as hoof and bone.

its made from the center of bird bones

It's made from pig's good eating.

You have been eating meat all that time, my friend

Yes, indeed it is. It can also be made from pigs. They boil the bones, skins, tendons and ligaments to extract the callogen from animals, which is what gelatine is. (you can google it for proof) It is many commercial foods, such as yogurt, ice cream,. pop tarts, icings, etc. A vegetarian substitute is agar agar or carageenan. Gelatine is also a common ingredient in cosmetics, hair gels, shampoos, etc.

You should always read labels on things just to make sure you aren't eating gelatin. Aside from candy, it will sometimes turn up in strange places, like certain low-fat sour creams. Gelatin is in nearly all non-organic yogurts as well.

There is also kosher gelatin which is made from ground fish bones instead of other animals.

no. gelitan does not have animals.

you can buy some stuff without it and yes gelatin is made from animals. its made from everything from tendons and ligaments to hooves and bones. there are vegan marshmellows but im sure theyre hard to find. good luck

uuuuh, no not cows, pigs and horses. yes, there are other rescourses but they're not too cheap...

i asked the same question and this is my best answer:
Read this and you decide.
What is gelatin/gelatine? Is there any alternative to it?
Gelatin (US spelling) or gelatine (British spelling) (used to make Jell-o and other desserts) is made from the boiled bones, skins and tendons of animals. An alternative substance is called Agar-Agar, which is derived from seaweed. Another is made from the root of the Kuzu. Agar-Agar is sold in noodle-like strands, in powdered form, or in long blocks, and is usually white-ish in color.

Some Kosher gelatins are made with agar-agar, most are not. Some things that are vegan that are replacing gelatin are: guar gum and carrageenan. Only some 'emulsifiers' are vegan. Gelatin is used in photography. Although the technology exists to replace photographic film, its price is currently prohibitive and there is insufficient demand. Hopefully, with the growth of vegetarianism and veganism, this situation will soon change.

hope it helps!

gelatin can be made from pig bone marrow or from pig skin. Dont be fooled by kosher gelatin because that is made from fish!
:)<3

Yes it's from boiling the hide, bones and ligaments of animals.

as ppl b4 me said, it is!
but I posted to reccomend agar-agar or konnyaku in its place.
not only are these low in calories (konnyaku having non really), but are high in fiber =)

Much of the time gelatin comes from pork which is why you see kosher gelatin products on the market, allowing Jewish people who avoid pork to have marshmallows. The kosher gelatin is usually made from fish. Hain Pure Foods makes "jello" type products that use carageenan (seaweed) as a gelling agent. It comes in several flavors, and you make it with hot water and stick it in the fridge just like regular jello. You can get it at some health food stores or www.veganessentials.com. (veganessentials also carries vegan marshmallows)

Sorry it is true,it's made from cows hooves and bones, beware of kosher gelation too,it's still made from cows hooves and bones .

Yes gelatin is made from cows. Also the one that is licked on the back of post stamps and in all the photographic films
since after almost a century since the invention of photography no suitable substitute has been found.

I can guarantee this since I am a patent engineer for a large photography firm of the USA.

In addition you find gelatin in slow release pharmaceuticals
pills, and in a number of other products that you cannot even imagine....

Well, I was going to give my answer, but I see that Veggie Girl has quoted it. So, I will give the short answer ... Yes gelatin is made from animals. Yes there are substitutes.

See Veggie Girl's answer for more details.
