Whats is so great about redvelvet cake?!

Question:

Whats is so great about redvelvet cake?

Ok So im always hearing people talk about how good it is. And I just made my first red velvet cake last knight not having any idea about what it tastes like. I didnt make it homeade but from a box mix. After it was done i thought to myself, This tastes just like a mild chocolate cake. So why does everyone rant and rave about it then? Its like red chocolate cake. Maybe if I made it homeade it would taste different?

Answers:
I think it's probably the light texture and the redness is cool too. Cream cheese frosting on any cake is always great, so that helps too.

RED VELVET CAKE

2 1/2 c all purpose flour
1 1/2 c sugar
1 1/2 c oil
1 c buttermilk
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 tsp cocoa
1 tsp salt
1 tsp soda
1 tsp vinegar
1-2oz bottle red food coloring (or 2-1oz bottle)

Mix all ingredients together and bake at 350F for about 30 to 35 minute.

Icing:

1 Box (16oz) confectioner's sugar (sifted)
1 stick butter, softened
1 8oz package cream cheese
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup mixed nuts
sugar
butter
cream cheese
vanilla

Combine first 5 ingredients. Add remaining ingredients until icing forms peaks. Fold in the nuts and spread over the cake.

It is a southern cultural icon. Homemade red velvet cake cost more than $8 because food coloring is so expensive. A box mix is about .$.99. The first time I tried it, my aunt (the bride) gave me a recipe with too much oil. I had to throw it out and find another recipe online.

Visually, though, it has great appeal with mounds of white icing contrasting with the rich red cake. I use it when catering company events. Personally, I like deep chocolate.

yea prob so...and what type of frosting did you use? that makes a big difference to me.

I'm a High School Senior and I'm going to college for Fashion Design. My mother, older sister and I bake desserts all the time. Sometimes we make it Homemade and Sometimes we just use the box kind. It tastes better homemade. Red Velvet Cake is Delicious the only difference about it is Red Food Coloring. Personally, Cream Cheese Frosting is to die for on any cake.

I always just thought it was the frosting -- cake was nothing special -- nice color.

the cream cheese icing is really good.

A red velvet cake is a chocolate base, but red food coloring is added. Did you put the cream cheese frosting on it? To me, that's what makes the cake. I use the mix too. I don't like many homemade cakes.

First of all you tasted a boxed red velvet cake!!!?? That's your problem. Red Velvet cake is a southern tradition, when you add the pecans into the cream cheese frosting. Really it originated in New York at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, but they only used plan cream cheese frosting, but when it was made in the south they added pecans to it. With all of the pecans trees we have down here (I live in Mobile, AL) they had to put them to good use. When its made right, it can be very addictive. Now I want some!!!

yeah..the box red velvet kinda sucks.but i love the true southern style red velvet cake because it isn't really a yellow, white or chocolate cake..it is unique in its flavor & texture. And just like most of the other answers...cream cheese frosting is a MUST!!!!!
