Why do people think that black people like watermelon?!

Question:

Why do people think that black people like watermelon?

i dont get it...........

Answers:
It's most likely because back during the days of slavery and during the times afterward, watermelon was a cheaper form of food that still fed the masses (along with chicken, which is another assumption - "black people love fried chicken!"), and as we know, most black people back then really couldn't afford much else other than the cheaper foods. Thus, it became an assumption that all blacks eat watermelon, and it has carried through to today, except now it's more that black people "LOVE!" watermelon rather than they just eat it.

It's still the same today - many families with a larger amount of mouths to feed buy the generic brands and foods that go around. I remember when I was younger and my parents had 5 kids and themselves to feed on my dad's military paycheck, and we ate quite a bit of watermelon, especially during the summer lol

The belief may have been spread with the silver souvenire spoons of the late 1800s-earlyer 1900s that often depicted a black person holding a watermelon. These spoons were mostly purchased by upper-middle and wealthier classes, which, as I said earlier, hardly any black people were in the upper-middle and wealthier classes back then.

It's an age-old assumption that has just grown in time.

cause i got them big lips

I'm black and I like watermelon. I think the most important question is why care what people think about what you eat.
That said, in the past blacks were portrayed very stereotypical. One of the images was a black person eating watermelon. Unfortunately the images have stuck to this day, but like the previous poster everyone regardless of race eats watermelon.

its goes back to the slavery issue and all the racial stereotypes. The watermelon was sometimes shown with an racist characterization of a slave child called the picaninny and this image was used with advertisements, postcards, and all. so i hope that sort of answers the question.
