Can you help me be a vegetarian/vegan....?!

Question:

Can you help me be a vegetarian/vegan....?

I want to get started. My reason is because i just dont like eating meat that much. also i guess i would like to make a minor difference to stop eating the main commercial meat to relieve the suffering of huge corporation farms that torture livestock with unliveable conditions and chemical injections; me not eating would stop the demand thus spare a life.

I need like a grocery list of things to get and recipes. Information on nutrition, etc. websites would be nice. I really want to be a vegetarian, because it just feels better and fresh.

I think some people may want to be vegetarians, but they really cant afford to do so. Also isnt true that world hunger could be solved sort of if farmers stopped feeding the livestock and actually give it to people thus feeding humans and not killing the livestock, something like that.

anyways help me with ideas on how to become a steady vegetarian and who knows eventually vegan.

Answers:
Uh, no. The crap they feed livestock would kill you.

Hi. Supermarkets usually have a vegan/veggie section where you can buy vegetarian sausages, burgers, nuggets etc. They also sell dairy free yogurts, vegetarian cheese, and different types of tofu. You should ask at your supermarket if you can't find them on your own.

There are lots of great websites to find recipes (i just google), not necessarily just for vegetarians.
This is one i have gotten a few recipes from...

It's important to make a conscious effort to eat a healthy diet thou! Make sure you include things like beans, lentils and lots of dark green leafy veggies like spinach, bok choy or broccoli and you'll be fine!
You want to maintain your Iron (Green leafy veggies, whole grains), Protein (legumes, nuts, tofu), Calcium (fruit and green leafy veggies), Zinc (whole grains, nuts) and Vitamin B12 (dairy) intake.
You should also make sure you eat foods that contain Vitamin C when eating foods containing Iron. The vitamin C helps your body absorb the Iron.

This website has info on being veggie, with great tips to get you off your feet!

Good Luck!!

well come to the world of vegetarians because of you many more animals will save their lives thanks :-
Proteins: Body's protein needs can be provided by either animal or plant sources. Mixed protein diet obtained from various plant sources is better than animal protein and is recommended in diabetes, renal diseases and liver diseases. Mixed protein diet from different plant sources has been the pattern of diet in India for all vegetarians.

Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are mainly found in plant foods; like cereals, grains, fresh and dry fruits, legumes, vegetable, greens, nuts etc. plant carbohydrates include' large amounts of starches, sugar and fibers which are important for gut functions. The body is better suited to a high carbohydrate diet than a low carbohydrate diet. In fact 55% of the food intake should be carbohydrate. All animal products do not contain carbohydrate which is essential for body.

Fat: Plant fats differ from animal fats in two different ways 1) they are cholesterol free 2) they generally contain more polyunsaturated fat and less saturated fats. Plant fats usually have higher polyunsaturated fat value than animal fats.

A diet which is low in cholesterol and which contains fat of a high PIS value is associated with a lower incident of coronary health disease.

Vitamins and Minerals: plant foods are rich in many vitamins and minerals.

Vitamin D: Vitamin D is obtained by exposure of skin to sun light and this is not a problem in India.

Calcium: The vegetarians can meet their needs for calcium from dairy products. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) Dark green vegetables are good sources of Riboflavin as are legumes and whole grain cereal.

Iron: The problem of iron deficiency is relatively common but vitamin C significantly enhances absorption of iron hence it is advisable for vegetarians to include with each meal a food high in vitamin C which as lime, citrus fruits or juices.

Zinc: Zinc is found in large number of plant foods.

Fiber: Fiber is found only in vegetarian food like whole grain cereals, legumes, greens, fruits, vegetable etc.

Thus in vegetarian foods all requirement of nutrition for body growth and maintenance is fulfilled. One can have a complete and balanced diet provided we take enough food which is as close to nature as possible in maintaining sturdy and disease free body. It is equally helpful in curing many diseases.

ADVANTAGES OF VEGETARIAN DIET:
More & more evidence is surfacing that directly links a prolonged non- vegetarian diet to diseases as cancers, heart diseases, diabetes, asthma just to name a few.

1. LOGEVITY: Vegetarian can expect to live 4-10 years longer then the non-vegetarians.

2. LESS HEART DISEASE: Because of low fat, saturated fat and cholesterol content of the vegetarian diet the risk of heart disease is lowered. High blood cholesterol levels are associated with increased risk of heart disease.

3. LESS CANCER: Up to 40% of all cancers are diet related. Cancer death rates have been associated with obesity and high fat / low fiber diet. Vitamin A & C are thought to be protective against colon cancer. Low fat diets protect against prostrate and breast cancer. Indoles, lignans, isoflavones, protease inhibitors which are present in plant foods and shown to be potent anti carcinogens.

4. LESS BOWEL DISEASE: Diverticular disease and appendicitis occur more frequently with low fiber intake as in meat diet.

5. LEES OBESITY & LESS INCIDENCE OF DIABETES: It is easier to plan a low fat diet for a vegetarian then for a meat eater. The fiber in plant food dilutes the energy & provides a satisfying meal without all the calories. Diabetes over the age of 40 seems to be related to obesity.

Excellent question! Congratulations on making a choice that is right for YOU. I am Vegan, but only because I feel it is better to fuel my body with what germinates from the earth, not because it is a sociopolitical correct way of living. My friends and family run the gambit of gastronomy: they're all happy herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores and I'm happy for them.

I plan my meals carefully, choosing foods that are in season and reasonably priced. Dried fruits and nuts are always plentiful, and many groceries now have organic sections that carry the simple basics. Unfortunately they are also distinguishing their "organic" items with an elitist air which, as well all know, is a simple marketing tactic. One of my summer favorites is a huge organic salad with raspberry vinaigrette, toasted pine nuts, and chunks of fresh, soft soy cheese drizzled with garlic oil. Serve this with slices of fresh fruit and ice cold lemonade and you're sure to feel great both mentally and physically.

I also extend these thoughts into my medical care as well. It is interesting to see how many vegetarians/vegans are firm with their food choices, but will agree to treatment with chemicals without a second thought (acute care and hospitalizations are an exception. This is about living, not dying).

The circle of life dictates that lives will be lost so that others can live, whether it be from the human race (war), animal kingdom (food), or plant kingdom (pestilence). The food chain is inevitably woven with the survivor on top: man. I think as you research and dable more into the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle, you'll find answers to the many questions you have.

Now if we can only teach man to kill only what he NEEDS...

You've gotten a lot of good answers here!

My only advice is to find someone who will become a vegetarian with you if you can! I promise that that makes it a million times easier.
