Once aspartame is swallowed is it same as sugar ?!

Question:

Once aspartame is swallowed is it same as sugar ?

Answers:
aspartame is a non carbohydrate sweetener. sugar is a carbohydrate. they have to go through different processes to be broken down in the body.

"Upon ingestion, aspartame breaks down into several residual chemicals, including aspartic acid, phenylalanine, methanol, and further breakdown products including formaldehyde (when consumed by rats)[7] and formic acid. There is some controversy surrounding the rate of breakdown into these various products and the effects that they have on those that consume aspartame-sweetened foods (see Aspartame Controversy, below).

The naturally-occurring essential amino acid phenylalanine is a health hazard to those born with phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare inherited disease that prevents the essential amino acid phenylalanine from being properly converted into Tyrosine and eventually being metabolized. Since individuals with PKU must consider aspartame as an additional source of phenylalanine, aspartame-containing foods sold in the United States must state "Phenylketonurics: Contains Phenylalanine" on their product labels."

aspartame is not really good to be eating, i think, because its metabolic end products are poisons (formic acid, formaldehyde, methanol). id rather eat sugar.

it was also developed by scientists under the CEO direction of a certain Donald Rumsfeld, and approved in 1981 for human consumption when the head of the FDA was fired by Ronald Regan (suspended and relieved of his duty, replaced one month later) after he wouldnt approve it.

Not at all. Aspartame is aspartic acid and phenylalanine... two amino acids that are building blocks of protein. It is not a carbohydrate like sugar.

It is very, very bad for you, better off with sugar if you have to consume something sweet.

The points made above re the chemistry are spot-on, and I too would endorse using sugar instead of aspartame.

One other effect of aspartame after swallowing is that it leaves a stringent, metallic after-taste, nothing at all like sugar. I personally find it quite unpleasant, and apart from the health concerns actively avoid anything with aspartame because of the flavour issue.
