Question:

Did anyone else see this amazing, but sad news article?

Sad to think such a noble animal survived an attack that long ago just to die from the same treatment present day. Amazing nevertheless =)

"The 49-foot male whale died when it was shot with a similar projectile last month, and the older device was found buried beneath its blubber as hunters carved it with a chain saw for harvesting"

"BOSTON - A 50-ton bowhead whale caught off the Alaskan coast last month had a weapon fragment embedded in its neck that showed it survived a similar hunt ― more than a century ago.

Embedded deep under its blubber was a 3 1/2-inch arrow-shaped projectile that has given researchers insight into the whale's age, estimated between 115 and 130 years old.

Calculating a whale's age can be difficult, and is usually gauged by amino acids in the eye lenses. It's rare to find one that has lived more than a century, but experts say the oldest were close to 200 years old."

Thanks for posting this! It is a sad story. Whales are by FAR my favorite animals b/c they are truly gentle giants. I agree - very noble animals! I talked about whales all the time when I was little. My Mum finally broke down and bought me a membership to GreenPeace when I was in the 2nd grade. LOL.
I just watched a special about this particular species this past weekend. They are indeed the oldest living whales. (Most others don't live that long). They make yearly journeys between Britian and Canada...they travel 10,000 miles in 10 days! Incredible! :-)
I hope that people will stop being butt heads about this. There are a precious few of these majestic creatures left and we need to protect them.

I am glad that it was proven that this whale lived such a long life. I am sure it was a great adventure for that whale. Long live every living creature that is hunted.

i just read it and couldn't believe it. isn't it sad that so much time has passed by and we are still doing the same s***. when will human kind learn. poor whale i feel so bad

I've read the Japanese still consume whale..Its a common food to them.. I couldn't do it... Those animals are endangered..For this whale to have suffered is a tragedy... I live in Michigan Deer Hunting is big.. There is a general rule among the Deer Hunters I have known. You Make the Kill quick so the animal doesn't suffer.. They always say that... It took a long time for that whale to stop feeling the sting of the harpoon.. And long after that it probably had trouble with infection.. This showed no respect for the animal or its spirit..Good post VC

Why is it whales have such a long lifespan?

!omg! well, to answer your question, i guess i have seen this article now that you've shown it to me! lol, sry, but no. where did u find this article anyway?

It's like that damn movie FINAL DESTINATION, but for whales. It just took the grim reaper a century to find him again! Very sad. I wonder how long he would have lived had he just died of old age? We'll never know. Underwater life fascinates the heck out of me. It's just so alien it blows my mind.

Whales are not supposed to be eaten by humans.
