Vegetarian/Vegan medical (s)care stories?!

Question:

Vegetarian/Vegan medical (s)care stories?

Last week, my mother's doctor suggested a "synthetic" form of Glucosamine for her knee arthritis because the "natural" form is made from shellfish which she is allergic to. When I spoke with the pharmacist, I was told that the "synthetic form was safe to take" only to discover that it is derived from cattle and shark cartilage!

I'm sure her story is not the only one out there!
