Position a rack in lower third of oven and preheat to 350F.
Line the bottoms of two 9x2-inch round pans with parchment paper.
Melt chocolate in microwave (LOW or MED), stirring occasionally until smooth.
You may use a double boiler too (make sure water is HOT, not simmering).
Cool chocolate until tepid.
Sift flour, cornstarch, baking soda and salt into a large mixing bowl.
Add brown sugar.
Using a paddle blade on electric mixer, combine the ingredients on low speed.
Add butter and sour cream.
Mix on med-low speed for 1 min to make a thick batter.
Add eggs, melted chocolate and vanilla.
Increase speed to high and beat for 2 mins.
Stop and scrape down the bowl.
Resume mixing at med-high, for about 5 sec.
Reduce speed to low and slowly pour in the water just until thoroughly blended.
Spoon batter into prepared pans and spread it evenly.
Bake until tops spring back when pressed lightly in the centers and a toothpick inserted into the centers comes out clean, 30-35 mins.
Transfer to cooling racks and cool for 10 mins.
Invert onto racks and remove pans.
Peel off the parchment and cool the cakes right side up.
NOTE: The cake can be baked 1 day in advance.
Wrap the cooled cake layers tightly with plastic wrap to store.
Or to freeze, over-wrapped with foil, for up to 2 weeks.

Yep, Walk down asda and buy one.

BAKERY

Go to a bookstore and buy a recipe book ( best if it's in a pastry shop) it's BEST you choose the cake as it would need different ingrediants

Go over asda, withyou take the cutest foto you can get of him, you no the kind that only his mum thinks are cute. They will print it on the cake for you there and then and they start from about 8 pounds ,bargin i thought, saves all the hassle and expence of havin to make one . good luck, and oh happy birthday to him ,have fun.
cheers sue pugh

a nice cake can be made from the box because your guy will love the work you made for it. My favorite quick cake is german chocolate with pcan dressing and they are tasty from Betty Crocker. Quick and easy. He will love it with milk

HI there,

If you dont have the Measuring things - perhaps you can go out and get a "box" cake at the shop - you just have to mix in some water and eggs usually and they have ready made frosting/icing

In some shops like tesco's you can get a full cake mix kit that includes the frosting (store brand)

In order to make a cake from scratch you will you will need measuring cups and measuring spoons (you can pick these up from the pound store) so that the cake turns out correct

buy one.

Why don't you just buy one. I'm guessing of you don't have anything to measure with do you even have a cake tin to cook it in. Anyone your bf will not mind as long as it shows you've done sometjing for him. You could get a plain cake and then ice it and decorate it yourself

What a nice gf!
Cake mix and canned frosting will be just fine.
If the cake is half as sweet as you are,....blah blah.
