Am I the only one that thinks Parmesan cheese smells like puke?!

There are studies showing that some people can taste compounds in foods that others can't, and/or have grown up with them so their taste for that compound may actually have evolved, etc, to make it okay for them.
Interesting food science.

I've always thought parmesan, and also any cheese that's been baked-till-brown on top of something, smells and tastes like vomit. (And the food science bears out that it is actually similar).

However, I've also discovered that I can acclimate to it to some degree. I now can eat fresh brick parmesan (NOT that horrible stuff in a can though) --usually grated or shredded-- without disliking it and will even like it if there's not too much.
Haven't gotten past the browned cheeses though, or the really-stinky cheeses that often smell like other unpleasant things.

P.S. Don't know if it's usually those with a good sense of smell who can smell-taste that vomity thing, though smell is an essential element of taste.
I have a really sensitive sense of smell, but it could also be other receptors I have for smelling and/or tasting certain compounds that makes the difference for this.

and sorry your sense of smell - has ALL to do with it - plus some events in your life to set you off - to make the association

Real parmesan cheese is from Parma, Italy. It certainly does not smell bad. You might ave tried some of the very poor imitations. I would bet that they don't use the real stuff, only the green boxes from the supermarket.

Lol. I agree. I think it stinks but it tastes SO good on spaghetti and other Italian foods. Bleu cheese is the worst!! It stinks so bad!!

I AGREE! Its soooo gross! My mom puts it in her food. It smells exactly like puke yucckk!
