Question: Lox and Bagels? Not a Joke...?
Could somebody explain what lox is? How is it correctly served and eaten? Can it be a breakfast dish?

Add some bits of boiled egg and capers and red onions and sliced tomatoes.
my favorite breakfast.

Lox is a salmon fillet that has been cured.
The term lox derives from Lachs in German and other European countries, meaning salmon. Lox is traditionally made by brining in a solution of water or oil, salt, sugars and spices (the brine) pretty much a pickled salmon fillet.
Lox has also become a reference to smoked salmon.
So more than likely if you order Lox and Bagels in a typical NY restaurant you will be served smoked salmon on a Bagel with cream cheese. Order it in Germany and you will be served a pickled salmon fillet on a Bagel.

Yes it can be a breakfast dish. It is the usual fair at most Bris celebrations that I have attended. You can toast or not toast your bagel. You can use cream cheese, butter, margarine or any spread you like. Place lox on top. cover. Wash your hands (http://www.aish.com/sh/ht/fn/48969461.ht… make a blessing and enjoy.

Toast a bagel, spread on cream cheese, add the lox. It's usually a breakfast/brunch item. Before adding the lox, I add chopped onion on top of the cream cheese and if I have them, I also add capers.

It's smoked salmon and Kosher, great with bagels and cream cheese with some red onion. Yum!
