Indian and Pakistani, too. There are lots of curry shops. Why: Indian subcontinent was once part of British Empire. There's been lots of cultural exchange...mainly food!
The UK is very culinary diverse, I am a former chef and visit my former chef mates often, I had my first Afghani dinner in the UK, I like Ethiopian, Jamaican, Indian, Turkish, the UK is like here in Canada were people ae not afraid to try new things, Indian food is the most popular take away next to Fish and Chips and Chinese, but there are others creeping up the ladder.
Indian, Chinese, Pakistani, Italian and French... are all popular.
Why? If you had to eat boiled food all the time, these international cuisines offer flavor and variety.
Another reason... Indian, Chinese (via Hong Kong) were all British colonies.

i would guess same reason they are popular in the US, they are considered a little more exotic than what is normally consumed
European dishes i would say,although some people in the UK really like Chinese food,hence the big Chinatown in London
