Asian sauce, something like Hinoan?!

Question: Asian sauce, something like Hinoan?
My 14 year old son asked me to pick up a sauce for him that they used in his cooking class, he couldn't quite remember what it was called. He said for sure its not soy sauce because it is sweet. I'm suspecting he may be referring to the brand name. All he gave me was Hinoin, which I can't figure.

Hoisin sauce is a sweet thick sauce.

You can find in on the Ethnic food aisle at most supermarkets.
Even Wal-Mart may have it... http://www.walmart.com/ip/Dynasty-Hoisin…

Dynasty isn't the best brand, but it's better than nothing.

The closest names to Hinoan that exist as a sauce are Hunan and Hoisin. Hoisin is the more common of the two. Hoisin is commonly used as a condament spread on pancakes for Kung Po Chicken (beef , pork...etc), and Peking duck.
Hunan sauce is more of a spicy sauce used to flavor a stir fry. (although hoisin can sometimes be used that way too)

It sounds like Hoisin sauce which is a sweet sauce and used a lot in Asian Cooking. It might also have been something like Kecap manis which is an Indonesian sweet soy sauce also used a lot in Asian cooking.

I would guess he was actually referring to Hoisin sauce, a very common sweet & thick asian sauce.
