Why do 16 year olds in Europe get to drink And in America you have to be 21?!

Question:

Why do 16 year olds in Europe get to drink And in America you have to be 21?

Answers:
Because in Europe the children grow up having wine with dinner and such, so they don't have the urge (for the most part) to "over-do it" when it comes time to legally go out and drink. In the U.S. we grow up with people telling us "don't drink, its bad" so as young people tend to do, when it comes time (or alot of times before) that they can legally drink, they want to rebel and go crazy. Bottom line is, when you tell someone that they cannot do it, it usually makes them want to do it even more.

It must be their culture.

Its exactly why we are also not allowed to have sex in the United States until we are 18...we are really protective of our young...they dont have parental controls in Europe =]

**Sex is part of of the Europeans culture, for all they care you can have sex when your 12

Im not saying that either culture is really great they are both kind of on extreme sides...if you could find a middle ground, you'd have a great culture

ahaha, ya i forgot that, here in ireland its 18 actually, but ya way better than 21, that sucks, how old are u am i ynger than u and i get to drink nd u dont? hehe, sorry for ur loss!!!!

Depending on the country you are talking about, the majority of legal drinking ages happens to be 18 in Europe.

Believe it or not, it is supposed to be a deterrant for teenage drinking and driving. People ages 18-21 are less careful behind the wheel of a car. In 1998, 42% of 18-20-year-old crash fatalities were alcohol related. The numbers aren't like that in Europe.

European, actually all around the world, drinking age is lower. The US is still a very puritanical/highly religious nation where children are coddled and are not considered responsible for their own actions. In many European nations wine and beer are part of every meal and tradition allows for drinking at a very young age. European nations are also much older and have delt with social issues over hundreds and hundreds of years while the US is still very young. Perhaps in the future our social concerns, such as drinking age, will be delt with by a more mature nation.

its their culture. they have been drinking since they were very young. in america people abuse the use of alcohol

Because America is controlled by fundamentalist religious freaks and Europe's governments are more common sense based. And as a culture, the Europeans certainly have more experience.

Move to Texas. Minors can drink alcohol as long as they are in the presence of one of their parents.

Europeans get to drink earlier because they don't have as many guns to cause accidental homocide with.
