Good question...

I am on a weight gaining program myself. It depends on a few factors:

-How much weight are you trying to gain?
-What is the time frame?
-Most importantly, are you serious and willing to stick with the diet program?

Let's start with the facts. To gain 1 pound, you will need to consume 3,500 calories. A good weight gain program depends on your age, gender, and body (height). An average female is 5'4'' at 130 lbs. So to maintain a weight of 13o, you need to consume 2,500 calories per day. An average male is 6'0'' at 170 lbs. To maintain a weight of 170 lbs., you need to eat 3,500 calories per day. For a skinny person say 100 lbs., you only need 1,500 to maintain your current weight.

So to gain weight, you will need to consume your daily required calories plus your desired weight gain in calories. For example, I am currently at 100 lbs. and I want to be at 140 lbs. Assume the average time frame as 1 pound per week. So, I will need to eat 2,500 calories plus an extra 500 (3,500 calories/ 7 days) calories per day = 3,000 calories per day.

Important information regarding weight gaining:
-Measure your weight gain based on per week based (ex. 1 lbs per week)

Why 1 lbs per week? For people who are naturally skinny, their eating habits are poor and unscheduled. Therefore, to gain weight, they have to change their perspective of foods and eating habits. Change is not something that come easy; otherwise, you could have gain weight easily a long time ago. Change and adapting is very vital to a diet program. It is the first step. If you failed here, nothing else will work.

-Eat either 3 big meals or 6 little meals

Because underweight people have a poor eating diet, simply telling them to eat more is just stupid and careless. Their stomach and intestines have been trained to function in a particular manner for a period of time. To simply eat more in 1 meal is just dreaming. Your body need time to readjust and adapt to eating more. Thus, eating more meals make more sense and more effective than eating larger meals. As time passes, your stomach will be able to eat more, don't worry about it now. Example: instead of 1,000 calories per meals, try 500 calories per meals. Seem a lot easier, huh?

-Time your meals. Eat when you should eat and more importantly don't eat when you shouldn't be eating

My first few times on the weight gaining diet was horrible because I was constantly eating, which I was not used to. I ended up not making my daily calories requirement. I ruined my meals by eating snacks and drinking between meals, so I never felt hungry. Resulting in eating very little. I learned that when it is time to eat, eat to your heart contents. However, when it is not time to eat, don't eat or drink anything. Why? Because your body need time to digest the foods and build up an bigger appetite. Your appetite will grow as time passes.

-Eat high calories foods, but avoid fatty, unhealthy foods

This is where your question comes into play. You should eat foods that are very high in calories, but not fatty, unhealthy foods. You can gain weight and be healthy at the same time. The trick is eating the right combination of foods. A tragic mistake skinny people make is thinking eating fast foods and greasy foods like burgers and fries at McDonalds will help them gain weight. It can, but it will also killed you. It does you more harm than good as avoid them. High protein foods are for guys gaining muscles while high calories foods is for anybody.

High Protein foods- protein shake, meats, fish, egg, soy
High calories foods- milk, soy milk, fruit juices, cheese, yogurt, nuts, dried fruits, fruits

Also avoid plain foods like water, bread, rice, vegetable, soda, etc. Don't get me wrong! It is okay to eat a salad and some fried rice in a while, but remember that your stomach doesn't have much space so you need high calories foods, not foods that take up spaces. Quality over quantity.

-The most important meals are breakfast and late night

When you sleep, your body restructure itself so it consumes calories. So, before you sleep, eat a full stomach of high calories foods, especially protein. Equally important is when you wake up, your body just got through working during sleep so now it is tired and hungry. It needs a good meal to re-fresh itself. Breakfast become very important and determine how your day will start. So start off your best and eating your best.

-Eat whatever you normal eat, but add more to it

What do I mean by adding more to it? For example, If you want to get rice and chicken, try making fried rice and adding cheese on top of the chicken. It add more calories to your meals and add more favors. The more little things you add to it, the better you will be at gaining weight.

...Good luck!

-When all least failed, power protein shake it!

Occasionally, you will tend to fall back on your old eating habits so you end up not eating enough for that day, especially when you feel sad or depressed. This is where a power protein shake come in handy. My power protein shake consist of milk, syrup, ice cream, and 2 scoops pf protein, which add up to 1,000 calories in a glass. Not exactly my idea of healthy, but desperate time called for desperate measure. It taste like super concentrated milkshake. Taste awfully, too. But, I want to gain weight and I am determine to do whatever it take to get there. So suck it up and drink it down.

About me: I have been at it for 5 weeks. I am up by 12 lbs. LOL!

Well, if your an average sized person you need around 1500-2000 calories and day and maybe a bit more if you're male. Also if you do exercise and how much will vary it as well, But yeah the best way to do it is probably just to take note how many you consume now on average. then add about 500 a day and see how far that gets you
