What the Heck is wrong with todays Produce?!

Question:

What the Heck is wrong with todays Produce?

The Other day I cut open an apple and it had --clear yellowish type spots-- inside and i dont mean bruses and the bananas have no tast to them. Yuck, oranges dont tast like an orange. I do shop at Win co foods so maybe that has somthing to do with it, I mean are they like instant produce that we get now.

Answers:
I fully agree! I prefer organic produce, even though it's more expensive. All the chemicals and stuff they put into the soil nowadays is a crying shame. Plus I know many store staff mishandle the produce. I've seen it for myself - a guy putting out bananas and then pressing them together to squish them all in!

Who knows where this stuff comes from now. Check the labels, its from places you hardly ever heard of. What regulations do you think are in place that control chemicals?? The corn for the last four or five years has been dreadful. No taste, your not kidding.

In the produce world there is a term "warehouse fresh" which means its just out of a warehouse, it isn't saying its fresh out of the ground or tree or whatever. It also doesn't take into account shipping time.

Seriously go to another store. The store I do most of my shopping at I would not touch their produce. There is another store I go to only for their produce. Shop around!

Too many insecticides and chemicals put on them.

Nowadays, farmers put growth hormones in the soil. I used to live near some land that was used to grow corn or tomatoes. The guy could get 2 complete crops of corn in a year. When he was growing tomatoes, he could get 3 crops a year. With genetically altered crops and growth hormones that are prevalent, it's best to grow your own.

I agree,i bought 2 green peppers that were packaged and it cost me $3.99 and when I got home I had to throw one out!!It was too soft to use.Upon picking out a cucumber the other day took forever to find one that was not wrinkled. Most of the apples in the bag are bad too.not to mention the high prices.

The price of fuel is also becoming a factor. The produce industry and the grocery stores are faced with a dilemma...drastically raise the prices to cover their fuel costs or reduce the quality. Try looking for a farmer's market in your area, you can call your local State Extension Office, probably located in the courthouse, and find this information . Keep in mind that the nutrients in fruits and veggies are directly related to the color and firmness of the fruit. The difference in quality is worth the extra money even when you are on a tight budget. The adage "an apple a day" most doctors believe that. Eating healthy makes you healthy.

I also shop at Win co but I hate the produce there. I try to go to a different store for fruit and vegetables or the farmers market.

Most of our produce, especially out of season stuff, is imported.... and the plants that produce them are bred for high yield now, so the taste suffers.

This is why I buy seasonal, locally grown organic produce. What a difference in taste!

Most crops are harvested when the produce is extremely green. A fruit that is force ripened has different qualities than fruit that is vine ripened. Also, with crop density always increasing, there is the possibility of a fungal or viral infection attacking the crop yet the infected crop may be allowed to go to market because all it did to the fruit and or veggie is make the product unsightly.

I go to my local market and I go wherever the asians shop as they are sticklers for fresh, quality produce (at least for themselves).
