Can Indian ghee be used for baking, like regular butter?!

Question: Can Indian ghee be used for baking, like regular butter?
Can ghee be used for cakes, cookies, etc..?

Answers:

NO NO NO

You can use it for pie crusts but that's about it. Technically it will work but it will not have the flavor that comes with the milk solids that were taken away in the ghee making process.

Some Indian sweets use ghee. I use it for a dish that's like an Indian version of rice crispy treats. If you use it for sweets use it for indian sweets that call for it, go with the experts on this one. LOL

Experience

Ghee can be used like a liquid fat.. so yes it can be used for baking where a recipe calls for oil (liquid fat). For recipes that call for solid fats, butter, lard, margarine, shortening... I would not use ghee.

It won't taste as good as butter because all the milk fats have been removed. I wouldn't recommend it.

Wouldn't taste good, it's mainly used in indian sweets.

I don't think so..because ghee is CLARIFIED butter.
