How do you spread frosting on a cupcake to make it look nice w/out a pastry bag?!

Question:

How do you spread frosting on a cupcake to make it look nice w/out a pastry bag?

Answers:
What I do is heat my frosting up just a bit in the microwave to loosen it up, turn the cupcakes upside down, dip and twist, voila! Frosting firms back up when cooled down

You can use a flat end plastic spatula and if you wish to design you can create a make shift pastry bag out of a zip lock sandwich bag w/ a small hole cut int the corner.

Use a flat bladed knife, dipped in boiling water to smooth out the frosting. Both the answers given are great. I'm going to try the microware one next time.

Use the back of a spoon to get those nice swirly peaks and valleys in frosting - on cupcakes or on a cake.

what I do is I frost the cake while it is still warm not hot but warm...
Cake is less likely to rip and also makes it smooth... and sometimes shiny depending on the frosting also a little bit if frosting will melt in the cake and make it absolutely delicious....
I always frost my cakes that way....

I saw this on food network one day...

Turn cupcakes upside down and dip them into the icing and twirl them until the icing is covered onto the cupcake.
