How is this food prepared in Japan (Octopus)?!
Answers:
Octopus (tako) and Squid (ika) are prepared in many different ways in Japan. I`ve eaten octopus tentacles both in Japan/Korea where they have been freshly chopped and still moving and considered quite a delicacy. They are both eaten raw in sushi/sashimi, grilled on a BBQ, eaten as a dried snack like potato chips and eaten during street festivals as Takoyaki, which is a small piece of octopus cooked with other ingredients in a fritter and really tasty.

I am a former chef neither squid or octopus is eaten live, the other person is pulling your leg, most times it is quick blanched in hot water to firm it up, both have to either be quick cooked or long stewed, it can be found in sushi, sashimi, tempura, grilled like a fish fillet, or chopped and made in fritters called Takoyaki, a very popular street food, the small ones may have been octopus or baby cuttlefish, another relative of there's.
i agree with john , in korea people do eat octopus life , not only raw. but in japan i never seen octopus life been eaten just raw food sashimi and sushi or cooked in takoyaki , sometimes they put in salad or make some stew with it. the one you ask about the whole baby octopus most probably the one they serve in sushi/ sashimi place( not every place have ) . i not really sure if they cut the beaks or not ( i think they should be, i know they cut the mouth/ beaks for the big one) but they usually prepare raw and coated or marinated with some sort of sauce. they have 2 kind one is the red one and the other one is the white one. for my personal taste i'm okay with the red one and don't like the white one. it just too strange for my taste.
For the most part, they aren't cooked. They are usually still alive. They wrap them around the chop sticks and then dip in sauce (soy mostly) and take it down. You need to make sure you are properly trained to do so because if you aren't you can choke and die (tentacles have suction cups that attach to your throat).
