Does chocolate go bad?!

Question:

Does chocolate go bad?

is that white stuff that shows up after it's open for a while just cocoa dust?

Answers:
Chocolate does not go bad, if you mean become dangerous. It does not support the growth of bacteria or mold. Chocolate developes the white surface for three reasons: one is from heat. The heat drives fat out of the chocolate and it makes a white coat on the surface. The second is from cold. When chocolate gets cold and is placed in a warm area (where the chocolate is colder then the air's dew point) moisture condenses on the surface. The water draws sugar out of the chocolate and makes a white coating. Both conditions are called "bloom." The last reason is from scuffing. When chocolate chips (for example) tumble on conveyor belts, they can become scuffed which looks white. To tell the difference, look in the curl of the choc chip. If it is shiny, the problem is scuffing, if not, it is bloomed.

Bloom changes the eating characteristics of the choc. If you are baking, it should be just fine... I make cookies with bloomed chips and they are fine. Eating out of hand, bloomed chocolate isn't very good. I'd recommend melting it in a double boiler using it to make your own chocolate drops or bars.

If the chocolate is a filled bar, it probably won't taste very good. It will be safe to eat though.

Not at my house : )

Yes chocolate can go bad. Once it starts turning white and powdery you know its way past its sell date and it'll taste really horrible too. Throw it out.

chocolate can go bad becuz it can expire or grow fungus

Uhh...chocolate can go bad. I think you might be referring to mold.

idk but if you have had it for a while get rid of it

The white stuff on chocolate is the sugar that surface when the chocolate gets old, it's not bad it just doesn't look too appealing

i dont know what it is, but it doesnt go bad for a LONG time. but when the white crap is on it, I dont eat honestly i wouldnt but go for it if you really wanna

The white stuff is actually the cocoa butter coming to the surface. It's a sign of age. If you melt it, it will be ok. If you eat it straight, it taste funky.

Chocolate doesn't have time to go bad in my house!

Yes. It will go stale and turn white-ish on the surface. The best way to prolong the shelflife of chocolate is to keep unused/uneaten portions wrapped as air-tight as possible and keep it in the freezer or refrigerator for later.

:)

Most women never ask this.....lol

On occassions it does go bad, especially chocolate syrup.

No that is mold and it is very bad if you eat it and it can make you very sick. Here are some good suggestions for keeping chocolate good.
1- Keep it in an airtight bag
2- Keep it refrigerated
3- Always check the date before eating it
4- DONT get it at thrift stores you dont know what happened to it there

does chocolate stay around long enough to go bad ^_^
