What kinds of recipes are the seeds used in? (Sweets, main dishes, etc.) Are they used for everyday foods, or for special holiday foods? Are the seeds used throughout India, or primarily in Karnataka? Have you ever seen this ingredient used in Western cooking?

Can you describe the appearance of the seeds (color, shape, size)? Can you describe the flavor of the seeds (nutty, sweet, bitter, pungent)?

What does the plant look like? Is the plant used just for its seeds, or are other parts of the plant used? For example, mustard, fenugreek (methi), and coriander plants are all used for both their leaves and their seeds, pumpkins are used for both their flesh and their seeds, and so forth.

Finally, if you live near an Indian grocery store, just wander up and down the aisles and see if you recognize it. The package will likely have the name in Hindi, English, and other languages, even if Kannada isn't one of them.
