When I lived out of the States for years, I used a fork tines down, held in my left hand., and still do if I am in the same situation.
When I am in the States, I tend to use my right hand, w. the tines up.
I think the continental way (first one) is much better- the other way looks as if one is shoveling food into their mouth.

When you eat with a fork the general habit is to hold it horizontally between your first knuckle of the middle finger and the tip of the index finger, while the thumb holds the handle firm. It is generally used with a right hand.
But some food items like meat, require a knife as well as fork, it is only at this point of time that you use the fork with your left hand and a knife with the right hand, to cut a piece. But once you finish cutting a piece, you keep the knife down and take the fork with your right hand and then put the piece into your mouth.
Also once the dinner is over, it is essential you place the fork and knife parallel to each other with the pointed side at the centre of the plate and the handles to the right hand side.

Hope I have helped you with the right answer that you were looking for.

This does not make any sense whatsoever. If you know how to type, ask a question, and know how to use the computer. Then how can you not know how to eat with a fork? It's very simple and my baby cousins know how. Why are you even asking? You been eating with your hands? Don't your parents teach you anything?

1. pick up fork with left hand
2. stick pointy end in food
3. use it to transfer food into mouth.

Here's a vid that explains both the european way and the barbaric american way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIj5Rt-7b…

put it in your hand and stab things with the pointy end and put it in your mouth......
