My mom used to make these also, calling them simply "fried dough". They can be made with already refrigerated biscuit dough from the store, or they can be made with a risen yeast bread dough pulled into smaller pieces and typically fried in butter. We always ate ours with just butter, but I've known other people to put sweet toppings on them like syrup, powdered sugar, or fruits. My mom's family is originally from Germany, but I'm not sure if this is a German thing, since I've encountered others (like Italian families) that did the same. Sometimes you can find fried dough at fairs or other celebrations sold by vendors. It is easy to do as long as you don't burn them!

Could be a scone, fry bread or a sopapilla :) (all the same thing really)
