What's that thing called to crush herbs?!

Question: What's that thing called to crush herbs?
They're usually like a bowl and and a stick like thing used in older times to crush herbs for medicine. What are they called? Are they still used today? What are and were they used for?

Answers:

Pestle and mortar are what they're called. The mortar is the bowl, and people use them today, particularly for grinding spices and herbs (as you said). They were originally used for grinding medicines, and can be made out of many different materials.
A good site for info. about them is Wikepedia (as usual!).

I'm presuming your talking about the little bowl with the thing inside it for crushing.

Its called a Pestle & Mortar.

The pestle is the crusher, the mortar is the small bowl.

Mortar(bowl) & Pestle (crusher) - phallic shaped !!
