'Seasoning" - to salt or not to salt ?!

Question: 'Seasoning" - to salt or not to salt ?
In recipes, when told to add "seasoning" does this refer to BOTH salt AND pepper - or just whatever you like. On T.V chefs inevitably add BOTH. Why? What is the relationship between them, and if you were watching your sodium intake and just used pepper would it affect the taste because the other was omitted ?
What are the different types of salt (ie sea and rock) used for ?

Answers:

When you say 'to season', it means to add something that'll enhance the flavor of the food. You can season foods with herbs, spices, salt, pepper, and anything that you like and indicated in the recipe. It doesn't only pertain to salt alone or salt and pepper.

There's no actually any relationship between them aside from the fact that they're both seasoning agent.

If you omitted salt in your recipe and just added pepper, it'll obviously affect the taste.

Hmmm.. types of salts? I only knew, rock salt, iodized salt, sea salt and just a plain table salt.

I wish this could help.

Add whatever you like, whatever tastes good to you. Salt and pepper are the most basic of seasonings and enhance most dishes. Of course, leaving salt out can affect the taste, but many people want to eat less salt, and everyone has a different idea of how much salt is enough. Sea salt is just another form of salt that some people think tastes better than regular table salt. Rock salt is more usually used for pickling than for seasoning. You can google both names for more info on them.

When it says to season in a recipe it means to add salt and pepper. Different kinds of salt are usually used as garnishes. Sea salt is generally used by most Chefs in professional kitchens. Salt is meant to support and enhance the flavor of the food. Pepper adds a little kick. With practice you will develop your palate and learn how to properly season foods.

Salt doesn't really add flavour to food, what it does is to enhance the food ingredients' flavours, same really happens with pepper. I stopped using salt in cooking many years ago, at the beginning I was surprised to find out that it didn't make the food blander as I was expecting, in fact the family didn't even notice it.

Add seasoning means to add whatever you like or prefer. Seasoning including salt changes the flavor of the dish.I don't eat salt on some things and some things I do. Rock Salt is for making Ice cream. Some salts have iodine or not. Sea salt is good. In cooking different salts are preference not that a recipe calls for it.

That depends on what your cooking. Some things go well with salt, some with pepper, or both. I'm not so sure about the types of salt, all I know is Iodised Salt and Rock salt.

My Brain

Salt will add taste and to me should be 'added to taste" a few minutes before serving.
