If you live in Los Angeles, you have to go downtown to Japanese Plaza in Little Tokyo. They have authentic confectionery shops that will blow you away. I'll give you a few:

Fugetsu-Do
Mikawaya
Mitsura Cafe - you can watch them make imagawayaki (two little pancake like things, filled with sweet red bean paste.

Plus, there are many places to eat there - authentic Japanese cuisine. Ask your teacher, she knows!

I recommend checking out Yelp.com for restaurant reviews in your area. Also, look for Japanese grocery stores. I'm not sure if Awajimaya or Ranch 99 are located in your area but you could Google them to see (both are Asian grocery stores and carry Japanese products).

When you go out to eat Japanese you MUST try some Sashimi (raw fish slices, so good) and Hamachi Kama! I certainly hope you're not close minded!
