What exactly is Sangria?!

Question:

What exactly is Sangria?

My Friends Girlfriend always raves about it, I have heard about it but never new what it was.

Answers:
Sangría is a wine punch which originated in Spain and Portugal. The word sangría comes from the Spanish sangre meaning blood. It typically consists of

red wine,
chopped or sliced fruit,
a sweetener such as honey or orange juice,
a small amount of added brandy, triple sec, or other spirits.
lemonade or another soft drink

It is a mixture of fruit juices fresh fruit and wine chilled and served over ice with a fresh fruit garnish. Its a girl drink dude!

This Sangria recipe is perfect for big summer parties - always a favorite, you may consider doubling the recipe.
INGREDIENTS:
1 Bottle of red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Rioja, Zinfandel, Shiraz)
1 Lemon cut into wedges
1 Orange cut into wedges
1 Lime cut into wedges
2 Tbsp sugar
Splash of orange juice
2 Shots of gin
1 Cup of sliced strawberries or raspberries (may use thawed or frozen)
1 Small can of diced pineapples (with juice)
4 Cups ginger ale
PREPARATION:
Pour wine in the pitcher and squeeze the juice wedges from the lemon, orange and lime into the wine. Toss in the fruit wedges (leaving out seeds if possible) and pineapple then add sugar, orange juice and gin

It's a great summer or feel for summer drink. It's always best when it's made fresh, without a nasty bar mix. ( A lot of places have a mix that you get a the store; gross)

If you ever come to Montreal you should go to Old Orchard Downtown and order Dane's Sangria. It's a red, yellow, green rainbow in a tall glass.

Uhhh, no, it's not just a "girl drink"! There are different variations of the drink, but everyone here has pretty much summed it up. Fresh fruit (apples, oranges, lemons, limes, strawberries...whatever you like), your favorite red wine, carbonated beverage, another liquor (such as brandy or Triple Sec) to fortify, and some people add sugar. It's really not advisable to purchase any mixes at the stores or even the bottled Sangria (not to me, anyway). Also, you'd want to prepare it at least a few hours ahead of serving time. It's best to make it and let it sit overnight in the fridge...this produces the best flavor. Hope this helped.

Oh, and you should try it. Many men enjoy the drink as well...totally NOT just a girl drink...
