Here's what you could do...eat a light dinner before you go. Not too heavy. That way if you go and you really didn't eat anything...you won't be starving. Then, when you go to the party...just try to go with an open mind. Ask of yourself to at least try just one bite of each item. It is a polite thing to do. You might not like some meal items but you might like others. I promise you that you'll be very proud of yourself AND honor your friend by at least "sampling". Most Chinese "Birthday" banquets are fairly uncommon. And when they are given they are usually done to honor someone rather elderly. You might also note that if they serve long noodles in a dish, you should at least have some to honor the "longevity" of you friend.
Most probably you would have chicken or duck served as a whole bird with bones, seafood would be a luxury, fish might be served with bone, shrimp unpeeled, and there should be soup too. Not knowing which kind of Chinese cuisine your friend has chosen, you could also have something simple like broccoli beef, kung pao chicken, or something exotic like jelly fish, animal innards, fungus etc.
