what type of oil do the french use?!

Question: What type of oil do the french use?
I'm going to Spain, France, and Italy this summer, and I need to know what type of oil do these countries use. I'm deathly allergic to Peanuts and Almonds. Please help.

The only nut oil commonly used for cooking is Peanut. Not a true nut but that is no matter to you. Almond oil would not likely be used in anything except confectionary/dessert/pastry.
In Spain Olive oil is the most common except for deep fried. They do import quite a bit if peanut oil there . France uses a great deal of Grapeseed oil as well as olive. Italy is proud of Olive oil but thjey too import soybean and peanut oil. For the most part if you avoid fried foods there should not be much to worry about. Fast food places ar the most problematic although even there you are most likely to encounter soybean and corn oil.
Watch out for the pastry. Be sure to ask if in doubt about Almond or Almond extract and Almond paste.
Remember Marzipan is sweetened Almond paste.
Edit: GG, butter is used throughout France true. But Southern France and Southern Italy prefer Olive Oil. The cooler regions prefer butter. But in the modern world with global food trade you cannot count on those traditional generalities being true.

The others are right, most time when using oil in cooking or baking or salad dressing it is a vegetable one, soya, corn or olive, there are some dressings and foods were hazelnut, walnut oils are used for a garnish, now in Europe, Grapeseed oil is popular, in most cases for frying or saute items, meat and fish, butter is used, but for mayonnaise, aoili and other emulsion dressings then it is vegetable based, as if they use any nut oils in there dressing as there is were it is used mostly, deep frying can be peanut oil, but not all the time, look for the words on menus like Arachide that is french for peanut, Almande for anything with almond or almonds

Hi: North of France and Northern Italy it is usually butter, South France more Olive oil. Olive oil in Spain and Southern Italy, but I would ask before ordering, as some companies may do both Olive and nut oils. To be on the really safe side, make some friends and have them prep you up some food (that you have bought for your meal, of course!)

Me - my Sister in Law is allergic to a lot of stuff and has to carry the injection kit with her.

The French don't generally use oil, they use BUTTER! But if a dish is made with oil it's generally olive oil as there are TONS of olive trees in Europe. You should always try and ask before you eat anything... these days most countries speak some English!

Olive oils. Same as the Greeks, Italians, Spaniards and Portuguese.

Extra virgin for dressing and baking foods. Virgin oils for frying.

My family farms olives!

In France, rapeseed/canola oil is popular, as is butter or olive oil. You'll find mainly olive oil in Spain and Italy.

Olive. Or Butter. Sometimes both.
