Alternatives to sushi rice?!

Question: Alternatives to sushi rice?
Sushi rice is about $10 for a small bag here. What are some alternative types of rice that I can make rice balls / rice burgers with? Would I cook it the same way as I would sushi rice?

Answers:

Sushi rice is made with white short grain Japanese rice, which has a consistency that differs from long-grain rice. The essential quality is its stickiness or glutinousness. The best substitute for sushi rice is any short-grain rice. I recommend Japanese but if you can't find it then try a Chinese short-grain rice which is very close. Don't use basmati or any long grain rice as it is not suitable.

If you are looking for a sushi rice substitute, you obviously want something a little sticky. LONG GRAIN RICE IS A HORRIBLE CHOICE!!!! You will need a short grain rice, I would probably use Arborio if I had no other choice. Arborio is what you would use in risotto. I would prepare it the way you would sushi rice, but don't expect the exact same result, seeing how it is not sushi rice.

Use regular rice, then add a little more water than the regular water amount while cooking it.

Try fried rice, or plain white rice if you don't eat fried foods.
