Are mordern pestiles good for grinding spices?!

A good stone one is best. Make sure they have small groves in the bottom. This dos the grinding. And they can be recut. But that is a disappearing skill. The finer the grind the more flavor on most spices. And whole spices stay fresher than ground spice. Longer shelf life. And the skin keeps them from picking up odors. The grinding groves should be kept fresh and sharpish.
Anything will do. I used to use a clean, smooth stone that I found. I mainly used it to grind dill seeds. Now I use an electric coffee grinder to grind many different herbs & spices, including rosemary from my own rosemary bush & dill seeds, which I still like to grind. Sometimes I grind tarragon so I won't have the dried leaves in what I'm eating, such as dip. I also grind medicinal herbs for tea. It makes short work for all of those.
If you mean pestles made with metal as modern pestle, then they are not. The traditional stone mortar and pestle are the best. The mortar should have rough end that makes the grinding.
Also, mortar and pestle is good for wet grinding or making a paste. For dry grinding electric grinder can be used.
