No! No taste! No eat in kitchin! You onry moving dish and creaning mess! Chef know how is seasoning. You no how work in resarant else you fire!

I'm not sure about restaurants, but prepackaged foods from stores (like potato salads, cooked chickens, pastas- think Whole Foods, Sam's clubs, and other supermarkets) they are not allowed to taste foods. Everything is done based off a recipe which needs to be followed to the t!

Restaurants owned by the head chef tends to have more leniency. The chef tastes the food. Restaurants like TGI Friday, not sure.

Cooks taste the food. Waiters never do. When a cook tastes the food he or she uses a clean spoon and adjusts the seasoning. A waiter is not trained to be knowledgeable about seasoning. Many restaurants do feed waitstaff. Some places have an actual staff meal called the family meal while other places just feed waitstaff scraps and things that didn't turn out properly.

Ask your employer. Good restaurants have meetings for the wait staff to see and taste the dishes. Personal recommendations from a waiter are sometimes solicited by patrons. Someone might ask "is that very sour" or salty or sweet, whatever. A waiter who can give me that insight is going to get a better tip than one who doesn't have a clue.
