Dumplings. Conjee (Jook ) I especially like the Snails in Shuojiao. And the fried Pumkin cakes for breakfast. Also for breakfast, Leek and Shrimp dumplings, dumplings filled with Red Bean Paste.

I love Chinese food, but what is generally served at US restaurants isn't Chinese food. That is unless you can get to a great Chinatown like in Chicago. Your chances are better there of getting authentic Chinese food.

As far as the generalizations, battered, fried and with a thick sauce is Chinese food. As well as vegetables most Americans don't buy on a general basis.

I usually think of egg drop soup, crab rangoon, lo mein, general tsao's chicken, beef and veggies, and dumplings. Is that anything like what real chinese food is?

My usually order is

Chicken Chow Mein
Rice
Chilli Chicken

I usually go for Hakka style Chinese.

it was sour and sweet.
