Has anyone ever seen a FAT vegan?!

Question:

Has anyone ever seen a FAT vegan?

An ex-gf had a brother who had some friends who claimed that they were vegans: no animal products at all. Fine. It is THEIR decision to make, and they are free to live as they want. The issue was that he was skinnier-than-a-rail, and she was a HUGE balloon!

How does this work? One WOULD think that a vegan diet would keep you "healthier" looking, i.e. skinny, but this girl was FAT! She was HUGE (+300 lbs)! We're talking throw some flour at her and look for the wet spot - kind of fat!

Could this be blamed simply on her appetite for junk food like chips and crackers and such or candy? You would have to eat A LOT of crackers, potato chips, and candy to get yourself as fat as this poor woman.

Oh! this was 15 years ago, and no idea whatever happened to the pair. My guess is that they were dating. It was just funny to see a manifestation of that tale about Jack Sprat eating no fat and his wife eating no lean! :-D

word to michael h. Maybe you should stop worrying about other people's problems and work on building your own self esteem. get a life

So what ? What has her size got to do with anything.

Dis-respect comes back to haunt you.

She is part of the 2% of vegans who are obese.

Even though you are a vegan, even if you eat healthy foods, the portion control and the kind of foods you eat does matter. Vegans exclude any kind of meat, etc. FINE! But whatever your diet you stick into, no matter how healthy it is (or not), if you take into large amounts of food at a time, no doubt, you'll get fat.

Have you read the news about that most obese people claim that they eat healthily? It is a news before in Yahoo! Feature news. What a news isn't?

I never had a vegan friend and your story is like... how come she became a vegan??? Perhaps, she just switch to being a vegan a couple of months...and the effect is not seen. Suppose to be, a vegan's life focuses on fruits and veggies- all low in fat and calories.

I wonder...

It depends on what else she eats besides junk food. Too much of fat or carbohydrates in any form could have made her fat. Or perhaps she has glandular problems which only a doctor can diagnose.

I'm one. I like to eat copious amounts of nuts.

Yes, my best friend's ex-gf. She was rather large before going vegan.

lol...a junk food diet just been sworn in to be converted into vegan. lol!!

It could be due to her consuming too much junk food despite being on a healthy vegan diet or it's genetics. I know of people who eat tons of unhealthy fattening foods but stay stick thin whereas another follows a healthy diet but with just the occasional snacks, piles on the weight. Some people put on weight very easily due to this genetic factor. If it is a genetically associated problem then it's pretty hard to tackle unless medication/surgery or other means are introduced. For her case, it could probably be due to genetics.

ive seen it, but the girl i knew had some major health problems that caused the obesity.

Maybe she was overweight BEFORE and then switched to a vegan diet. Weight doesn't just fall off unless you limit your caloric intake to below what you're burning. And there definitely is vegan food that is not GOOD for you. It does depend on what you're eating, I'm sure not many vegans GET fat off a vegan diet.

She's probably a big junk food eater or has a metabolism disorder or other medical problem or else she's just starting out as a vegan.

The singer from Good Clean Fun is HUGE and he's been vegan for about 12 years.

I'm a chunky vegan, but it is because I have to take copious amounts of steroids due to a medical problem. No matter how well I eat or how much I work out (even with a trainer) I have had a hard time loosing weight at all. I believe eating a vegan diet has kept me from gaining more weight (I don't need the extra hormones and steroids in the animal products). Before I had to take the steroids I maintained a healthy weight.

You could live off oils, nuts, avocados, and carbs and be a rail. I swear. I've seen it. I've been it.

I was not unhealthy, just my body was young and used my food very fast. I'm still very thin (I always have been, nothing to do with vegan), although have some more love, not much though.

Everyones body takes food and uses it a little differently, although I would say this woman was unhealthy previously or currently unhealthy while vegan.

If you are 300+ and vegan I would consult a Doctor to run some blood tests etc to assure yourself you don't have a medical condition effecting your weight. Perhaps this woman also ate far too much salt and had some nasty nasty water retension.
