Veggie soc has the stats.
about 6 % claim it, about 4% are.
problem is, many people will say they are veggie but when you question them further about what a veggie is the numbers start to go down.
Also, it really depends on the age, far more teenagers claim to be veggies, but are not, the numbers go down as they get to thier 20's ( i guess they become honest or something ! )

be careful of stats produced over the last 10 years because they have been skewed by the BSE scare. you neeed to be looking at reports since 2003 really.

In repsonse to Michael H - when I was in school, it seemed to be the 'in thing' to be veggie. many seemed to think it was still acceptable to eat chicken, fish and meat products like gelatine "because it's not REALLY meat like pork or beef". Or after a few weeks, they began to crave bacon and cracked!
Hmmm, I feel a question coming on - how is it that people can go veggie for several years and then eat meat again with no ill effects? Does your body just remember how to digest it? I was force fed a sausage roll when I was 10 and I was being sick for 3 days after, so I don't see how you can do it!
All -right. And the hardest part of eaten a vegetable is getting them back in the wheel chair. Oh. Guess why I'm not nursing any more. I' ll take the slams -- the ones I will take most seriously are from nurses. I burned out. I loved my people, there but for the grace of God go I. No problem here because I've sheltered Muslims and Jewish in my house. Hey, I'm Irish from the North and the South. I THINK its around 3 million. I remember from when mars made that RIDICULOUS decision to decide to use non veggie whey powder that the vegetarian society quoted this figure as the number of veggies in the uk I think to show how moronic this was and how many customers theyd lose. Thankfully theyve changed their minds on that one!
I dont know though if that figure inclused vegans.
