is urad dal the same as black gram?!


Question: Is urad dal the same as black gram?
I have a recipe for dal makni and the recipe calls for urad dal. At the spice shop they gave mea packet labelled black gram which looks alot like black Channa Is the right thing???

Daal Makhani uses the first picture link. It looks like a black version of a black eyed pea with the same kind of marking on the side.

Dal Makhni is normally made with whole Urad. Urad Dal normally refers to split Urad beans.
Urad was termed as Black gram by British during Raj.
Urad is also called Black Matpe.
Urad is not same as Black Chana, also called Desi Chana.
Desi Chana in English is called Bengal Gram.

I suppose it depends on labels. black channa (which is gram) is not the same as urad. Urad dal looks a little bit like split moong (mung beans). It is small and white and leaves a sort of powdery residue and is sticky when cooked. I am sure you can get whole urad (not split) but it shouldn't look like channa! It's def not the same thing!!
